The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is one of the two main political parties in India, together with the National Congress of India. As of 2016, it is the largest political party in the country in terms of representation in the national parliament and state assemblies, and is the largest party in the world in terms of primary membership. The BJP is a right-wing party, with close ideological and organizational ties to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

The origins of the BJP are found in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, formed in 1951 by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. After the State of Emergency in 1977, Jana Sangh merged with several other parties to form the Janata Party; defeated the party in Congress in the 1977 general election. After three years in power, the Janata party dissolved in 1980 with members of the former Jana Sangh meeting to form the BJP. Although initially failed, winning only two seats in the 1984 general election, he grew in strength in the back of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. After victories in several state elections and better performances in national elections, the BJP became the largest party in parliament in 1996; however, lacked a majority in the lower house of Parliament, and its government lasted only 13 days.

After the 1998 general election, the BJP-led coalition known as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed a government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for a year. After new elections, the government of the NDA, directed again by Vajpayee, lasted a complete period in the position; this was the first non-congressional government to do so. In the general elections of 2004, the NDA suffered an unexpected defeat, and during the following ten years the BJP was the main opposition party. For a long time Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi led to a landslide victory in the general elections of 2014. Since that election, Modi has led the NDA government as Prime Minister and, from July 2017, the alliance governs 18 states.

The official ideology of the BJP is "integral humanism," formulated by Deendayal Upadhyaya in 1965. The party expresses its commitment to Hindutva, and its policy has historically reflected Hindu nationalist positions. The BJP defends social conservatism and a foreign policy centered on nationalist principles. Its key issues have included the repeal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya and the application of a uniform civil code. However, the NDA government of 1998-2004 did not pursue any of these controversial issues. Instead, it focused on a largely neo-liberal economic policy that prioritizes globalization and economic growth over social welfare.
